Aus dem mittelschwedischen Ort Ludvika stammt die Melodic Metal-Band Cruel Devoted, die erst diesen Juni ihre neue EP Home veröffentlicht hat. Henrik, Jesper, Emil und Simon sind die vier skandinavischen Buben, aus denen das außergewöhn-liche Newcomer-Quartett besteht.

Der Home-Release und vor allem der Song The Dream Lost Within haben Pingvin dazu bewegt, ein paar Takte mit den Schweden zu sprechen. So entstand an dieser Stelle das erste Interview von Cruel Devoted für deutschsprachige Leser.

Euer Sound klingt super! Verratet ihr mir, wie Cruel Devoted Songs fabriziert?

Cruel Devoted: Es beginnt immer mit der Idee eines Band-mitgliedes, für einen Song oder lediglich eines guten Riffs. Gemeinsam tauschen wir dann unsere Gedanken darüber aus und diskutieren wie es vielleicht noch besser klingen könnte.

Offenbar hat Schweden mehr zu bieten als Abba, Roxette und Ace of Base. Wer hat euch inspiriert?

Cruel Devoted: Wir denken, dass die Inspiration eines Jeden von uns in unserer Musik zu finden ist. Jesper z.B. steht sehr für Dream Theater, Simon für Iron Maiden. Unsere Musik ist ein Produkt aus vielen Stilen.

Mir gefällt das Video von The Dream Lost Within sehr. Habt ihr am Script mitgewirkt?

Cruel Devoted: Wir sind mit Simon Hjortek von Magnificent Beast in Kontakt getreten. Er entwickelte ein Script und wir alle waren begeistert. Daraufhin haben wir ihn für den Video-dreh engagiert. Mit dem Ergebnis könnten wir nicht glücklicher sein!

Um euch besser einordnen zu können: WAS ist Cruel Devoted?

Cruel Devoted: Wir sind eine Melodic Metal-Band, von vielen Genres inspiriert und stets darum bemüht, als Band Weiter-entwicklung zu erfahren. Wir haben immer eine gute Stim-mung, überall: Auf der Bühne, bei Soundchecks, im Studio. Lachen ist etwas, das wir alle sehr genießen!

Gibt es ein Ziel, das ihr als Band erreichen wollt?

Cruel Devoted: Für jeden steht Weltruhm an erster Stelle. Für uns jedoch zählt Entwicklung, individuell und als Band, im Vordergrund. Aktuell wollen wir gleichzeitig erreichen, überall in Schweden gebucht zu werden.

Wie sieht es mit einem kommenden Album oder einer EP aus?

Cruel Devoted: Unsere aktuelle EP Home kam am 9. Juni über Spotify und iTunes auf den Markt. 

Mit Blick auf die Zukunft: Was sind die nächsten Schritte von Cruel Devoted?

Cruel Devoted: Der erste und wichtigste Schritt ist, mehr Gigs spielen zu können. Letztes Jahr ist es sehr ruhig gewesen, da wir alle weit voneinander weg wohnen, mit der Schule zu tun hatten und uns auf die EP konzentriert haben. Wir sprachen über Möglichkeiten einer Schweden-Tour, aber auch über Auftritte außerhalb unseres Landes, um die Fan-base wachsen zu lassen. 

Your sound is incredible. Can you tell me how tracks get created by Cruel Devoted?

Cruel Devoted: It usually starts with someone coming up with an idea of a song or just a basic riff. Then, everybody tells their opinions about it and ideas of how to improve it or even ideas of how to follow it up.

As you are from Sweden. Swedish music has even more to offer than Abba, Roxette and Ace of Base. Who influenced you?

Cruel Devoted: We think that all of our personal influences effects the music we creates. Jesper for example is influenced a lot by Dream Theater, while Simon is influenced a lot by Iron Maiden. The sound we have is really a huge mix of different styles.

I like the video of The Dream Lost Within a lot! Have you been involved into the script of the clip?

Cruel Devoted: We contacted Simon Hjortek at Magnificent Beast regarding how to make the music video for the song. He came up with a script which we all grew very fond off. We then hired him to shoot the video. We couldn’t be more happier with the result!

Let me understand Cruel Devoted. WHO are you?

Cruel Devoted: We’re a melodic metal band, influenced by all sorts of genres, always seeking improvement as a band. We’re always having a very fun time; on stage, at rehearsals, on tour, in the studio, laughing is something we all enjoy. 

Is there anything you want to reach as a band?

Cruel Devoted: World fame has always been everyones major goal. But we’re always aiming for improvement both individually and as band. We’d say our current goal for now is to get out with gigs further spread out in Sweden.

What about a coming album or EP? 

Cruel Devoted: Our latest EP HOME was released June 9th on Spotify & iTunes. We’ve had some minor ideas about a concept album as well.

With a view onto the future: What are the next coming steps of Cruel Devoted?

Cruel Devoted: First and foremost is to get more shows done. Last year has been quite empty because of distance between the members, graduations and a lot of focus on the EP. We’ve talked a bit about trying to arrange some kind of tour here in Sweden. Also, shows outside of Sweden is also a very huge step towards expanding our fanbase.
